Crime In America And The Media’s Bias Towards Perpetrators

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Media bias in crime coverage favors ideology over facts, excusing leftists like Robinson while vilifying conservatives like Rittenhouse, deepening the U.S. divide.

On September 10, Americans were stunned by a senseless act of violence. Charlie Kirk, a popular conservative figure, was violently gunned down in broad daylight and in the full view of thousands who were attending one of his events. The despicable assassination drew condemnation from the American people, the conservative half of the country at least. Two days after the gruesome assassination, law enforcement arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson for killing Kirk.

Evidence coming out up until now proves the 22-year-old killed Kirk over the conservative activist’s transgender ideology. While Robinson comes from a conservative family, it is safe to say the 22-year-old is a radical leftist. Since word got out of Robinson’s arrest, the leftist media has bent over backwards to rationalize his actions. Robinson’s action has, so far, not been met with the same demonization tactics the media used for January 6 protesters.

If anyone is a domestic terrorist and a threat to democracy, as the media portrayed the protesters, it must be the person who murdered his fellow American over differences in political ideology. The Threat to Democracy must be Robinson. Instead, the media has chosen the path of rationalizing the actions of a cold-blooded murderer.

This action of the media is not limited only to Kirk’s assassination. When the media covers a violent act, their portrayal of the perpetrator is not formed based on the crime, but by the race, gender, and political ideology of the criminal and the victim. And this points to deeply disturbing hypocrisy within the heavily left-leaning media elite in America.

How The Media Covers Crimes On Ideological Lines

Prior to Robinson’s arrest, when no one knew the shooter’s identity, the leftist media were reluctant to portray Kirk’s murder as a political assassination. The media feigned caution and urged people to wait for more information about the killer. This kind of caution is only encouraged by the media when the perpetrator is a leftist. This is the same media that fueled the “hands up don’t shoot” hoax, leading to violent riots.

When authorities revealed Robinson as the killer, the media tried desperately to link him to conservatives. And when that failed, they began rationalizing his actions. CNN’s Montel Williams painted Robinson as a person who was motivated by emotions and not politics. Williams also claimed that Robinson shot Kirk because the conservative activist was “disparaging” his transgender partner. This comes from the same media outlet that demonized then-17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse and labeled him a racist after he shot three BLM rioters who threatened his life.

Even though Robinson had committed a violent murder, he still got the soft glove from the media compared to Rittenhouse, whose actions were in self-defense. The reason for this different treatment lies in their political ideology. Robinson is a leftist whose victim is a conservative, while Rittenhouse is a conservative whose attackers were radical leftists.

Antifa and BLM protesters spent the better part of 2020 carrying out violent riots all over the country. The rioters burned businesses, violently attacked police officers, and caused billions in damage. According to the Guardian, at least 25 Americans died as a result of the riots. The largely leftist media, however, described the riots as a “peaceful protest.” On one of CNN’s reports on the riots, footage showed one of the outlet’s correspondents reporting in front of a building and several cars that had been set ablaze by the rioters. CNN captioned the footage “FIERY BUT MOSTLY PEACEFUL PROTESTS.”

In contrast, the media vilified everyone who participated in the January 6, 2021, Capitol protest. The protesters were labeled “domestic terrorists,” “a threat to Democracy,” and “insurrectionists.” And when the Biden administration came after the protesters, the media cheered and even encouraged people to turn their family in for prosecution if they attended the protest.

Black On White Vs. White On Black Crimes

Iryna Zarutska fled Ukraine in 2022 with her mother, sister, and brother to escape the war with Russia. Three years into her stay in the U.S., Iryna had settled into her new life. One could say she was already feeling at home. The young Ukrainian’s life was, however, cut short after she was brutally murdered in an unprovoked, senseless act of violence.

The suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown, had a long criminal rap sheet and should be in jail in an ideal setting. But when it comes to punishing crimes, most Democrat-run cities are far from ideal settings.

Brown reportedly walked through the train car afterward, covered in blood and holding a knife, while muttering, “I got that white girl.” Since Brown’s arrest, there have been efforts on the left and in the media to blame his mental condition and homelessness as the reasons for the act. Any attempt to point to the racial undertones of the crime and Brown’s criminal history was immediately shut down. CNN’s Van Jones even blasted Kirk for noting Brown’s racial motives.

“We don’t know why that man did what he did. And for Charlie Kirk to say ‘we know he did it because she’s white’, when there is no evidence of that, is pure rage mongering hate mongering,” Jones said on CNN.

Would Jones and CNN still have the same view if the perpetrator had been a white man and the victim a black woman? Would they still want to ignore the possible racial motive if the white man had said, “I got that Black girl”? The answer is a big fat “No,” and here is why.

Daniel Penny, a former Marine veteran, was riding a train on a New York subway in May 2023 when, 30-year-old Jordan Neely, a homeless man, began acting erratically and threatening passengers. According to reports, Neely, a Black man, said, “I’m gonna kill everybody. I could go to prison forever, I don’t care.” Penny and others around stepped in to protect the vulnerable people on the train. The veteran, while trying to restrain Neely, put him in a chokehold, leading to the 30-year-old’s unfortunate death.

The media went ballistic. Segments of the media, particularly left-leaning outlets and commentators, portrayed Penny as racist or implied racial motivations in his actions, even though there was no evidence. Some even called him a “white vigilante.” Even after Penny was acquitted, the Guardian still ran an article in which the author accused the veteran’s lawyer of using a “racist defense strategy.”

Despite the unfortunate outcome of Penny’s action, his restraint of Neely actually protected other passengers on the train, who told reporters that they feared for their lives. But according to the media, Penny is a racist villain, but we must ignore Decarlos Brown’s racial motives. In fact, the media would have preferred not to talk about Brown’s crime altogether.

Final Words

Conservatives, no matter how minor the alleged crime may be, are called to be lynched. Leftists, on the other hand, are treated with kid gloves. When George Floyd, who had a lengthy rap sheet, died in police custody, the Media called for blood. However, when a Capitol police officer fatally shot an unarmed Ashli Babbitt, the media went silent. Babbitt, compared to Floyd, was a veteran who had served the nation honorably.

When mass shootings are committed by straight white males, the media is quick to condemn the perpetrators. However, when a transgender or Black person commits such a crime, the media can’t wait to get it out of the news cycle.

America may be the greatest nation on earth, but the country is deeply divided. No group is doing more to widen the divide than the media.
