The United States has clear legal pathways for those seeking to immigrate, and bypassing those processes is a violation of federal law.

While some migrants seek asylum, a significant portion of these encounters involve individuals attempting to bypass legal processes altogether.

 

The human toll of illegal immigration is staggering. A 2023 study from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that over 1,400 migrants died or went missing along the U.S.-Mexico border in 2022, making it one of the deadliest migration routes in the world. These tragedies stem largely from false promises and misconceptions about open borders.

Encouraging illegal entry—whether through rhetoric or lax enforcement—exposes vulnerable people to these risks. Is it truly compassionate to foster hope in a system that cannot legally or logistically accommodate everyone?

There is an inherent unfairness baked into illegal immigration and the exponential increase of asylum claims. Once a migrant crosses into the United States, they are fed, closed, housed, educated, and medically cared for courtest of the American taxpayer. Many critics of Trump’s immigration poicies need to take a long, hard look in the mirror. It is definitely worth asking whether the greater harm comes from those who implicitly or explicitly encourage illegal migration – or the president who aims to stop it.

1. Sanctuary Cities: Cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities inadvertently send a message that illegal entry carries no real consequences.
2. Policy Rhetoric: Early in President Biden’s administration, a more lenient approach to immigration enforcement—including halting deportations—was widely interpreted as an open invitation, fueling a surge in border crossings.
3. Human Traffickers: Cartels and traffickers exploit lax enforcement and political rhetoric, preying on vulnerable migrants by promising safe passage that often leads to exploitation or death.
